Re-polishing
If you have a cast iron bath, a specialist procedure called re-polishing can be done on site to restore the enamel to its original colour and shine. Re-polishing is normally considered if the enamel is still intact but is rough, stained or has lime scale.
Damage to cast iron baths is normally caused by using abrasive cleaning products which can remove the enamels shine and cause the enamel to become streaked, rough and porous. The enamel will eventually attract dirt, look grey and become very difficult to keep clean.
Having leaky taps or a leaky showerhead will cause water to sit on the enamel which will form a lime scale deposit and eventually corrode the surface. Cleaning the bath after every use is important as this will remove soap scum and body grease. Wiping the bath out after cleaning will prevent any lime scale forming.
When cleaning enamel always use a product that has been approved by the Institute of Vitreous Enamel Association.
For VEA approved products which can be purchased at your local supermarket you can visit their web site at www.ive.co.uk
Resurfacing
Resurfacing is a specialist procedure carried out if the enamel on your bath has multiple chipping, rusting or if the enamel has worn too thin to be restored by polishing.
If all other works in the bathroom are intact and the bath is the only problem then the bath can be resurfaced on site without removing any taps, fittings or tilling. If the bath is looked after and the after care instructions are followed resurfacing is a very successful alternative to re-enamelling. Resurfacing can be carried out in a variety of different colours.
Resurfacing and re-enamelling are two completely different procedures. If you would like your bath to be enamelled then you must remove the bath from the bathroom and send it to a vitreous enameller.
For further information regarding vitreous enamelling and for approved VEA members who can re-enamel your bath you can visit the Institute of Vitreous Enamel Associations web site at www.ive.co.uk.
Chip Repairs
Chip repairs are carried out on site and can repair damage to cast iron and pressed steel baths. The chip repair is filled and colour matched to the original enamel.
Chips can be caused in a number of ways, the most common being hand held shower heads and metal plugs being dropped, or tools being dropped when carrying out renovation works such as tilling etc...
Anti-slip
Anti-slip can be applied to the base of the bath where you would normally stand to shower. Anti-slip is ideal if your bath has been resurfaced as bath mats with suction pads are not recommended to be used on a resurfaced bath.
Anti-slip is a good alternative to a bath mat as the anti-slip is virtually invisible and more hygienic.
An anti-slip finish must be kept clean to prevent loss off any friction. Soap scum, body grease, oil, conditioner or shampoo residue can cause the anti-slip to be less effective so cleaning the bath after every shower or bath is important.
